All County Chorus
Students from all county high schools, middle schools, private schools and home schools are eligible to participate in the Middle School and High School Honors Choruses. Students audition in the early Fall and are selected to participate in a choral clinic and concert before the Fall semester is over. Prior to the clinic, students work with their respective choral conductors and teachers to learn the music for the concert.
Choral singers have been described as “vocal athletes” because they must breathe correctly, sing the right notes, speak the words clearly, watch the director, remember changes in rhythm and volume, project their voices and communicate the composer’s message with sustained energy and feeling. Perhaps the most important skill is learning to work as a team to accomplish together what no one of them can do alone.

NCMEA Honors Chorus
The North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus is a group of approximately 195 students who are chosen from across North Carolina to perform at the NCMEA Conference each year. The purpose of this Honors Chorus is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their abilities to the greatest possible extent. Teachers who are members of NCMEA are permitted to send in auditions from six of their students. Adjudicators are hired to select the members of the Honors Chorus. Teachers then work with their students in preparation for the concert and students spend the day before the concert working with the clinician. Participating in the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus is very rewarding for teachers, students and their families.
Mars Hill Choral Festival
In 1949, J. Elwood Roberts established this festival in an effort to improve choral music in the high schools of western North Carolina. In the beginning, the “clinic” was comprised of about fifteen schools in the immediate-surrounding area. Since then, this annual event has grown into one of the premier choral festivals in North Carolina and is the longest, continuously running festival of its type in the southeast. Each year over 900 students from approximately 150 high schools audition for the Festival Choir, with the top 350 students being chosen to participate.
